Top 6 Things You Must Try in Mazatlan Mexico!

Are you planning on taking a trip to Mazatlan Mexico? There are many great sights to see, foods to eat, things to do, you won’t want to miss anything!

Keep reading for a list of things you must do in Mazatlan, Mexico.

1. Old Mazatlán

You will want to give yourself plenty of time to see Centro Histórico, also known as Old Mazatlán. There are many historical sites in this location to see and one of the main sites is the Basilica Cathedral of Mazatlán.

The historical Basilica Cathedral of Mazatlán is home to the Catholic Diocese in Mazatlán and is the main religious center of the town. If you are interested in historical architecture you will enjoy the deep yellow spires on the outside of the building and admire the fine Italian marble in the interior.

Construction on the temple began in 1856 and was completed in 1899 and is in a Baroque-Revival style. This cathedral is still in use so if you plan on visiting be mindful of the mass schedule to avoid interrupting services or visit at night when there are fewer masses being held. You can also enjoy the ambiance of the evening lighting at the old church.

There are also lots of great places to eat in Old Mazatlán from street tacos to papas locos which are hand-cut fries with all sorts of different toppings to choose from. At the end of the day, take a stroll along the Malecón and enjoy the many different beautiful monuments and statues.

2. Playa Olas Altas

If you are wanting to spend some time at the beach then you will want to avoid the busier Playa las Gaviotas and head over to Playa Olas Altas. This beach location has beautiful aquamarine waters and golden sand which are perfect ways to enjoy some swimming or sunbathing.

There are some great cafes in the area for when you want to grab a bite to eat and a few vendors who will approach you to see if you are interested in their fares. If you are not interested just simply say “no gracias” and they will move on to another potential customer.

Playa Olas Altas translates to “High Waves Beach” and can be a great beach to spend time at if you are a surfing enthusiast but might be a bit rough if you are looking for a leisurely swim.

3. El Faro Lighthouse

Interestingly enough, El Faro in Spanish means lighthouse, so tourists have been calling this location “the lighthouse lighthouse.” Regardless of the redundancy, this is one of the most popular attractions in Mazatlán.

After about a 30-minute hike up some rough trails, you will finally make your way up to the site of El Faro. The structure is free to enter and after making it to the top you will be rewarded with stunning views of the southernmost tip of Mazatlán.

When planning your hike to the lighthouse, make sure you wear comfortable hiking shoes, long pants to fend off bug bites, and bring plenty of water to keep from getting dehydrated. It can be quite hot and muggy in this part of Mexico and you don’t want to be caught off guard and make yourself sick.

4. Mazatlán Aquarium

One of the best aquariums in Mexico is the Mazatlán Aquarium. There are over 200 different species of fish to look at in more than 50 different tanks throughout the aquarium. You can also see a variety of different animals such as sea lions and macaws, as well as eels and sea horses.

This aquarium is smaller and older than some but has a variety of different activities that will be fun for the whole family. There are different shows to watch such as a sea lion show or a diver swimming with sharks, or you can head out to do some fishing for the day.

5. Isla de la Piedra

For a quiet little day trip in the sun, you can board an inexpensive city bus to a cheap ferry boat that will take you to the Isla de la Piedra. This rustic island has a lot to offer away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are lots of fun outdoor activities you can do while visiting Isla de la Piedra such as fishing, horseback riding or swimming at the beach. You can also book a scenic boat tour that will take you around for a beautiful perspective of the island.

6. Angela Peralta Theatre

To immerse yourself in some of the local culture of Mazatlán you should visit the Angela Peralta Theatre which is located in Old Mazatlán. The opera house dates back to the 19th century and was named after a popular Mexican opera singer who died of yellow fever.

It was closed down and was being used as a parking garage before being restored to its original luster in the 1980s. The interior consists of beautifully detailed wood balconies and an art gallery upstairs. The art gallery features pictures of the theater before the restoration and visitors can marvel at the amount of work that was needed to get it back to its original splendor. Who knows, you might even get inspired to start your own restoration or Contemporary Art Collection!
