Seeking that adrenalin rush? Well, a bungee jump in any of these red hot destinations is sure to hit the spot! Rated not just for height but for their surroundings too, any of these bungee jumps could make it to number one on most adrenalin chasers list.
1. Queenstown, New Zealand:
Probably the centre of the adventure sports universe, New Zealand’s south island, and in particular Queenstown, are famous for the bungee jumping options. The Ledge is the main company here although there are others in the surrounding countryside too, but the main draw here is doing a jump over the city of Queenstown. The scenery is literally spectacular, with the lakeside location and looming mountains in the background part of the massive draw. You can also do a night jump for a breathtaking view of the town’s lights below you.
NZ$150 gets you a jump and certificate. Afterwards go white water rafting, kayaking or cycling. The city of Queenstown is famous for it’s legendary nightlife, with live acts and DJ’s regularly in attendance.
2. Bloukrans Bridge, Garden Route, South Africa:
Set along the beautiful and spectacular garden route is this awesome bungee location. Expect to pay ZAR750 (about US$85) for jump and certificate, but to say you’ve jumped here – it’s worth it! This gorge is the highest natural bungee jumping spot in the world and is surrounded by some beautiful wilderness. South Africa also offers excellent treks or you can hire a mountain bike to appreciate the natural beauty on offer here.
Nearby towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are also excellent stop offs for food and beaching. If you’re a surfer then you’re in the right spot, with the surfers’ haven of Jeffery’s Bay a few hours drive down the road. Just beyond J-Bay (as it is called) is the city of Port Elizabeth which has some excellent safari spots, including an excellent elephant safari park.
3. Macau Tower, Macau/China:
This jump takes you out over the casino mecca of Macau, now a special zone of China – similar to Hong Kong. Set atop the Macau Tower with it’s large observation deck, check out the views but save the buffet til after the jump! For US$311 you get the jump, certificate and t-shirt to prove you did it. Then with the adrenalin coursing through your veins, hit the casinos and put all your remaining cash on red!
4. Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge, CO/USA:
Simply by virtue of being the highest jump in the world, Royal Gorge gets the nod. As part of an activity centre you can also go zip-lining and other activities, but the jump itself will set you back around US$60. Nearby Royal Gorge Park is excellent for walking and camping or mountain biking.
5. Victoria Falls Bridge, Zimbabwe/Zambia:
Just around the corner from one of Africa’s mightiest sights, Victoria Falls, is this excellent jump. It’s US$130 per person but the view is literally spectacular and to say you’ve jumped here would be to make you the envy of any of your adrenalin chasing friends.
Zambia is an emerging tourist destination and offers some fantastic safari options, much cheaper than neighboring South Africa. You can also take a cruise on the Zambezi river and go trekking in the national parks.
